Single Swing Buying Guide: How to choose the right model

Single swings satisfy the natural need for movement and offer children and adults a place of pure joy. But the choice is huge. To help you find the perfect model for a public playground or your own garden, we’ve summarised the key buying criteria for you.

From what age is a single swing suitable?

++ Even the very youngest from around 6 months can swing in special baby seats under supervision – provided they can already hold their head up on their own. Such single swings offer safety with a surrounding safety bar and centre struts that prevent slipping through.

++ For children from 2 years, mini swings with a low entry height or toddler safety seats are ideal, allowing a safe and easy start into swinging fun.

++ From around 3 years, when coordination and strength are sufficient to hold on independently, it’s time to switch to a classic swing seat without a bar. Here you can choose between rigid board seats or flexible rubber seats that adapt ergonomically and minimise the risk of injury.

++ For teenagers and adults we recommend extra-wide, reinforced swing seats that can withstand higher loads.

How much space does a swing need to move freely?

To ensure children can swing safely and carefree, sufficient free space is essential. A simple rule of thumb: Take the rope length of the swing and add the rope length plus 2 m in the swinging direction (forwards and backwards). For a swing with a 2 m rope length, you therefore need a clear run of around 8 m in total. To the sides, you should allow at least 1 m distance to fences, walls or other equipment.

For public playgrounds, this space must comply with DIN EN 1176 as follows:

• Side clearance on both sides: at least 1.50 m each
• Forwards and backwards (swing direction): at least 2 m each

It is also important that the ground in this area is impact-absorbing, for example with bark mulch, sand or safety tiles. Further information on impact protection can be found here.

Wood or metal: Which material suits my location?

The choice of material for your single swing depends heavily on the surroundings and level of use. Wooden single swings blend naturally into gardens or nature-oriented playgrounds, but require regular maintenance. Metal frames, often made of galvanised steel, are extremely robust, weather-resistant and low-maintenance. They are therefore particularly suitable for heavily used public playgrounds where vandalism may be an issue.

Important: When buying a single swing for a public playground, always look for certification according to DIN EN 1176. For private gardens, the requirements are less strict, but you should still opt for tested, certified quality.
