Wobble Bridge – Outdoor adventure for active kids
Wobble Bridge Buying Guide: How to find the right wobble bridge for your playground
A wobble bridge is a real highlight for any outdoor area. But what matters when buying one? In this guide, we answer the 4 key questions for maximum balancing fun.
- What does a wobble bridge promote?
- Which material is best for a wobble bridge?
- How safe are wobble bridges?
- Which rope is suitable for a rope bridge?
What does a wobble bridge promote?
Wobble bridges offer great benefits for motor skills, body awareness and social competence. They encourage balancing and coordination and boost children’s motivation to overcome challenges. Equipment with steps at different heights, varying surfaces or modular designs further increases the educational play value.
Which material for a wobble bridge?
For wobble bridges, the choice of material is crucial for safety, durability and sustainability. For public areas, TÜV certification according to DIN EN 1176 is an important quality mark:
- Structural timber (e.g. robinia) must be splinter-free and weather-resistant.
- Metal parts need a corrosion-resistant coating.
- Plastics must be UV-stable, free from harmful substances and long-lasting.
- Connecting elements (chains, ropes) must be designed so they neither cut into the skin nor wear out quickly.
How safe are wobble bridges?
Every wobble bridge in our online shop is manufactured to the highest safety standards and is often TÜV certified. Safety is the top priority. Thanks to robust materials, the wobble bridges are also extremely durable.Standards you need to know
The most important standard for public playground equipment in Germany and Europe is DIN EN 1176. It defines all safety-related and structural requirements for wobble bridges and similar elements.
Key requirements at a glance:
- Stability and construction: The bridge must be firmly anchored in the ground or feature a tested suspended construction. All components must withstand repeated dynamic loads.
- Impact protection: The area under and around the wobble bridge must be equipped with impact-absorbing surfacing (e.g. sand, bark mulch or certified safety tiles).
- Fall protection: Depending on the fall height, sturdy guardrails or handrails must be installed. Entrapment points where head, torso or limbs could get stuck must be structurally avoided.
- Accessibility: When planning and purchasing, inclusion and accessibility requirements according to DIN 18034-1 should be taken into account.
Ignoring these requirements can lead to liability issues. Operators are liable in the event of damage if the equipment does not comply with current standards or if maintenance requirements have been neglected.
Good to know: Safety doesn’t end after installation. Regular inspections and professional maintenance are mandatory. According to DIN EN 1176-7, inspection intervals (visual, operational and annual) must be observed and documented.
Which rope is suitable for a rope bridge?
For rope bridges on public playgrounds and in institutions, choosing the right rope is crucial for safety, durability and compliance with standards. The rope must meet specific technical and legal requirements:
1. Rope construction and material- Steel core with plastic sheathing:
Proven and recommended is a rope with a load-bearing steel core (usually galvanized) and a robust plastic sheathing (mostly polypropylene (PP) or polyamide, often with UV stabiliser).
The combination of steel rope (for load-bearing capacity) and plastic jacket (for grip comfort, weather resistance, and protection against splinters and injuries) is the current state of the art. - Solid plastic ropes are unsuitable for load-bearing elements, as they generally do not provide the required strength and durability.
- The standard range is 16–22 mm. Ropes with a diameter of 18 mm are often used for balancing or hanging elements.
- The diameter must be chosen so that it is easy to grip and suitable for both children and inspection tools.
3. Standards and test criteria
- Rope bridges are subject to DIN EN 1176-1 (general requirements) and DIN EN 1176-6 (specific requirements for rope play equipment and bridges).
- The rope must demonstrate high tensile strength, UV resistance, weather resistance and freedom from harmful substances.
- The sheathing and connectors (compression clamps, end fittings) must be designed so that no entrapment or pinch points occur.
4. Quality and safety features
- TÜV/GS certificate: The rope or the complete product should carry appropriate test marks.
- Easy maintenance: Fittings and tensioning systems should be easily accessible for quick inspection and adjustment.
