How big should a nest swing be?

The ideal size of a nest swing depends on who will use it and where it will be installed. Larger models have the advantage that several children can swing together or adults can relax comfortably on them. For inclusive facilities or therapeutic use, make sure there is enough space so that children using aids can also swing safely and comfortably.

As a rule of thumb:

• For private gardens and small children, models with a diameter of 80–100 cm are sufficient.
• For public playgrounds, schoolyards and therapy centres, we recommend larger versions with a diameter of 120–150 cm.

 

How much space do you need for a nest swing?

When planning your system, you must consider not only the dimensions of the swing itself but also the required safety clearances. An outdoor nest swing needs a clear space of at least 2 m to each side and 2 m in front of and behind the swing. For a nest swing with a 120 cm diameter, the entire structure should therefore be positioned with a minimum overall width of 320 cm.

 

How high can you hang a nest swing?

For safe and comfortable use, a nest swing should be hung so that the lowest point of the seat surface is around 40–60 cm above the ground when unloaded. It is important to ensure sufficient clearance underneath and to the sides to allow safe swinging and dismounting. Plan for an impact-absorbing surface throughout the entire fall zone, such as safety tiles, sand or wood chips.

How many children are allowed on a nest swing?

The number of children who can swing at the same time depends on the load capacity and the diameter. With a diameter of 120–150 cm and a load capacity of 100–200 kg, 3 to 5 children can sit and swing safely at the same time. Smaller versions with a diameter of approx. 90–100 cm are suitable for 1 to 2 children. Nest swings on public playgrounds that are also intended for teenagers or adults should offer a load capacity of around 300 kg.
