Korfball rules: How to play korfball

With its mix of basketball, football and handball, korfball is the new trend sport. In korfball, 4 women and 4 men – or 4 girls and 4 boys – play together as equals on one team. Women only defend women, men only defend men. This gender-neutral sport is therefore especially popular in PE lessons with mixed-gender classes. The aim of the game is to score more baskets than the opposing team. To do this, you must throw the korfball from above through the basket. The defender must stand at least one arm’s length away from the shooter. The backboard-free korfball baskets are not positioned at the end of the court, but around 7 m inside the field of play. This allows players to shoot and score from all sides within the playing area. You are not allowed to hit or snatch the ball out of an opponent’s hands. However, you may intercept a pass as long as the korfball is still in the air. The ball may only be moved towards the korfball basket by passing. This means only clever teamwork within the side leads to scoring success.

These are the differences between korfball and “Korbball”

At first glance, korfball and the German sport “Korbball” seem very similar – not just in name. For example, body contact is largely prohibited in both sports. However, while in Korbball you may block with arms stretched out to the side or upwards, this is completely forbidden in korfball. Other differences are more obvious: a korfball team is mixed-gender and consists of 8 players. In Korbball, there are 5 men or 5 women per team (genders play separately). In the better-known Korbball, unlike korfball, there is a shooting circle and a dedicated basket keeper for the 2.50-m-high basket (3.50 m in korfball). In Korbball, a maximum of 6 steps with the handball-like Korbball is allowed if you dribble in between. In korfball, dribbling and running with the more football-like korfball are prohibited.
