Baseball is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of nine players each that take turns batting (offence) and fielding (defence). The field consists of four white bases, laid out in a diamond. The area within and near the four bases is the infield, and the area beyond is the outfield. The aim of the game is to score more runs than your opponents. The rules are as follows: The batter must not run until they have hit the ball thrown by the pitcher. They must reach a base before the fielding team catches the ball and “puts the batter out”. If a runner reaches a base before they are out, the next player steps up to bat. If the runner manages to run a complete circuit of all four bases in one go, they score a home run. When a team scores three outs, the teams switch roles for the next half-inning. The team that scores the most runs in nine innings wins the game.
