Metal slides

A metal slide is a proven, versatile playground element that stands out thanks to its weather resistance, variety of shapes and easy maintenance. That’s why it is especially popular in public playgrounds, schools and leisure facilities. The construction is key: metal slides are usually made of stainless steel and typically consist of an access platform, a smoothly finished sliding surface, sturdy side panels and a safe run-out area. 

The key advantage of metal slides

Stainless steel slides offer maximum durability and, thanks to their resistance to UV rays, frost and rain, are ideal for continuous outdoor use. Their easy-care surfaces support good hygiene and help keep maintenance costs low.

Safety with metal slides 

When planning, purchasing and operating a metal slide, safety always comes first. The key European standard DIN EN 1176 stipulates that sliding surfaces must be free from hazardous edges, that sufficient falling and movement spaces are provided and that the run-out area is safely designed. Other crucial safety factors include sliding speed, the angle of inclination and the temperature that can build up on the surface in direct sunlight.

++ Temperature build-up: Especially in summer, a metal slide can heat up significantly in direct sunlight, reaching surface temperatures of over 60 °C – and even up to 80 °C. This poses a real risk of burns. To prevent this, it’s advisable to install metal slides in the shade, use sun sails or choose light colours, and to carry out regular temperature checks and provide warning notices on hot days. 

++ Sliding speed: Regular cleaning with a mild detergent removes dirt and maintains the ideal smoothness. Flash rust and dull areas can be treated with stainless steel cleaners; minor scratches or uneven spots can be polished out. For safety reasons, the use of oils, grease, wax or any other external sliding agents is strictly prohibited.

++ How steep can a children’s slide be? Angle of inclination: The inclination of children’s slides for playgrounds is regulated by DIN EN 1176-3. For straight slides, the permissible range is at least 17 degrees and a maximum of 35 degrees. Sections of up to 0.5 m – for example at the entry – may be steeper, up to a maximum of 60 degrees. The gradient ensures plenty of fun while still keeping the risk of accidents low. An adequately sized run-out area and stable side walls are also mandatory. 

How long can a metal slide be?

From a technical point of view, metal slides – especially embankment and tube slides – can easily exceed 10 m in length and, in special cases, even reach 20 m or more.

For classic playground slides in public areas, practical lengths are usually around 2 to 5 m, depending on platform height and safety requirements. The size of a slide is determined by its intended use and the age group:

• Toddler slides for nurseries or private gardens are usually 1.50 to 2.50 m long with platform heights of 0.90 to 1.20 m.
• Playground slides for older children and public playgrounds generally have platform heights between 1.50 and 3.00 m and reach lengths of 3 to 5 m.
